Welcome! This information is about the descendants of Phoeby Uridge, and Richard Bathurst. Pheoby immigrated in July 1852 to New Zealand, on the ship "Samarang", with six children. Today, they have approximately 300 descendants.

Phoeby (also known as Pheebe, Pheobe, and Phebe) was born between 1810 and 1819 at Hoo, Kent. At that time the family of George URIDGE and Frances LANE lived in Hoo, and it is assumed, although not proven, that her parents were George and Frances. A family legend goes that she was the stunningly attractive but illiterate daughter of a farmer who sold milk to the Bathurst family. Phoeby lived with, but never married Richard BATHURST and it is believed they had nine children. After Richard's death Pheoby immigrated in July 1852 to New Zealand, on the ship "Samarang". Pheobe later married Richard MARTIN on 16 April 1857 but they did not have any children. Pheobe died, after living 33 years in New Zealand, on 17 May 1889 at Okains Bay, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand.

Additional information about each person is available in the Narratives, which can be accessed by choosing the hyperlinked name.

My sincere thanks to Judith Batt, and Shirley Dixon of New Zealand for their co-operation and collaboration in compiling this information and for providing the collection of superb photographs.

Richard and Phoeby's eldest daughter was Frances Elizabeth. She was baptized on 25 April 1830 at St. Mary, Chatham, Kent. Frances married Thomas FOWLER in 1851 on the ship "Midlothian", en route to New Zealand. Thomas and Frances had a son, Thomas Fowler Jnr, on 24 August 1852.

Caroline Henrietta Coffin-Bathurst

Richard and Phoeby's second daughter was Caroline Henrietta or Henrietta. Caroline was born in 1834 at Chatham, Kent, and was the partner of Alexander COFFIN. Caroline died on 19 October 1920 at Stratford, New Zealand.

Alexander COFFIN was also known as Long Tom COFFIN. He was born in the USA, and went to New Zealand from Nantucket, USA. There is anecdotal evidence that he ran away to sea at the age of 12 years.

Richard and Phoeby's eldest son was William who was born in 1836 at Greenwich, London. He emigrated with his mother Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand. No other information is currently known.
Richard and Phoeby's next son was Richard George who was born 30 May 1837, and baptised on 9 October at Greenwich, London. He emigrated with his mother Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand. No other information is currently known.

Richard and Phoeby's fifth child was Dorothy Ellen, known as Ellen. She was born in 1838 at Greenwich, London. She emigrated with his mother Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand. She married William THOMAS on 23 March 1855. William died in 1870, and Dorothy remarried James Robertson LEASK on 8 September 1872. She died on 4 May 1946 in Foxton, New Zealand.

SarahAnn Dean-Bathurst

Richard and Phoeby's sixth child was Sarah Ann who was born in 1839 at Greenwich, London. She emigrated with his mother Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand.

On 19 July 1855, Sarah Ann married Joseph Henry DEAN, the brother of John DEAN who later married her sister Emma.

Richard and Phoeby's seventh child Emma, was born on 4 November 1840 at 6 Brand Street, Greenwich, London. She was baptized on 4 December 1840 at Saint Alfege, Greenwich, London. She emigrated with her mother Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand.

Edward Thomas, Richard and Phoeby's eighth child, was born in 1842 at Greenwich, London. Edward died in infancy in 1843 at Greenwich, London.
Possibly Richard and Phoeby's youngest child was Thomas who was born between 1843 and 1845. He emigrated with Pheobe on the ship "Samarang" in July 1852 to New Zealand. However it is unsure whether he was Pheobe's child, or one of her daughters. No other information is currently known.
