     Francis Chetwood URIDGE was born on 17 March 1898 in California.^2,3 He was the son of Walter George URIDGE and Ethel MOTT.¹ Francis Chetwood URIDGE was educated in 1908? At American Colony Grammar School.² In the census of 1910 at Township 4, Fresno County, California, he was listed as aged 12 born in California, the son of Walter URIDGE.⁴ During WWI, Francis served in the army infantry. For six to eight months the family heard nothing from him and had no idea where he was or what happened to him. When they finally received a letter from him, they found he had been in hospital with dysentry.

After returning to civilian life he met and married the former Margaret "Peg" D. WHITNEY. For a number of years, Peg and Fran lived in New York, where Fran tried his hand at writing. However it seems he didn't have great success in this field.

When they returned to California, they settled in Berkeley, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. The home they lived in was designed by Maybeck, a well-know bay area architect.
