Percival Thomas REES (1889-1960)
He was the son of Thomas Richards REES and Helene Charlotte BLOFELD.2 In the census of 31 March 1901 at Scoveston Fort, Llanstadwell, Pembrokeshire, he was listed as born in India (British Colony), the son of Thomas REES.4,7 Percival began military service during the First World War in the First Glamorgan Bantams. During World War I he won the Military Medal while serving with The Welch Regiment in France. He was wounded during an action in Bourbon Wood. He was listed as Sergeant P. Rees 26126 in the War Diary for February 1918 as being presented with the Military Medal for Gallantry in Bourlon Wood on November 23rd, 24th & 25th, 1917.8,9,10,11,12,6
Percival married Janet Georgina PACKER on 4 September 1918 at Parish Church, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire. The marriage was witnessed by Thos PACKER and Emma PACKER.16,17,18,15 As of 1960, Percival Thomas REES lived at Aldergrove Road, Porth, Glamorganshire.6 In a newspaper cutting from a Porth newspaper it reads:
"For the last five generations a "thin red line" of military tradition has run through the Rees family, of Porth.
I heard the proud story from 71-year-old Mr. Percy Rees, of Aldergrove-road, Porth, who born in soldiers' quarters in India, followed his father, grandfather and great-grand-father into the Regular Army.
But now the family tradition may end, for his sons, Stan and Eric, after completing their National Service in the Army, returned to civilian life to pursue their careers.
Stan, who is 22, was wounded in Korea with the King's Own Liverpool Regiment and now works at the Rest Assured factory, Pontygwaith.
Eric, aged 25, served with the Royal Welch Fusiliers in Kingston, Jamaica, and now works at the Aero Zip factory, Treforest.
During World War I Mr. Rees won the Military Medal while serving with The Welch Regiment in France.
"Our battalion was heavily outnumbered and running out of ammunition, so they gave me the medal for going back to bring us some more." he told me.
At the bloody battle of Cambrai in November, 1917, Mr. Rees was wounded during an action in Bourbon Wood, but this did not prevent him from serving with the regiment during World War II.
I asked Mr. Rees if family tradition had ever been upset by somebody joining another branch of the Services.
He confessed that his son Eric's twin-brother, Valentine, wanted to do his National Service in the Royal Navy.
"But he couldn't get in and went down the mines instead." So the family tradition was saved.
With his sons Stan, Eric and Valentine civilians, it would seem that the family tradition has little hope of maintaining their Army connections.
"I'm pinning my hopes on my two grandsons, aged 10 and 12." said Mr. Rees.6
Percival died in August 1960. His death was registered in the Pontypridd registration district.1,19 He was buried at Glyntaff Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Glyntaff, Pontypridd, Glamorganshire.1

This book focuses on Scranton, the epicentre of Welsh America during its golden era. The author examines cultural life, the literary and musical societies, eisteddfodau and religious groups as well as other aspects of popular culture such as insobriety and sports that the leaders of the Welsh community frowned upon. He also analyses the self-image of Welsh America as reflected in its own newspapers and periodicals; the relationship of the Welsh with other ethnic groups; and, of course, the anthracite industry which in its boom years drew thousands of skilled Welsh miners across the Atlantic.3
